Chesterfield Basketball Club come short against Cyclones and Knights

The club played 2 games over 3 days last week welcoming Crookes Cyclones on Wednesday 11th March before travelling to Rotherham to play Kingstone Knights on the 13th of March.

The Wednesday fixture was always going to be tough, Crookes are a well established team with 3 teams in the local league playing in Div 1, Div 2 and Div 3 respectively. As Chesterfield look to enter the league at Div 4 level, we know this would be a very tough contest with a mix of players from all 3 of the Crookes teams playing in this game. Chesterfield came out strong scoring a flurry of quick baskets and working hard on the offense to disrupt the Cyclones defence and score quick points. Unfortunately, Crookes experience and high level players shined through and they piled on huge pressure on the Chesterfield defence with a final score of Chesterfield Basketball Club: 54 – 79 Crookes Cyclones- Game MVP: Caleb Ogbonna

Attention quickly turned to our game on Friday night as we made the short journey North to play against Kingstone Knights, hoping for a 3rd time lucky against the Barnsley based squad. Coming out of the blocks early again, Chesterfield score quick points and took an early lead that was maintained for almost 3 quarters of the game. With 4 minutes left of the 3rd quarter, Chesterfield held an 11 point lead. A fast flurry of baskets from Kingstone however lead to a scrambled defence which Chesterfield then did not respond with baskets of their own. The 3rd quarter ended with Kingstone slightly ahead. Unfortunately, despite signs of a fast start to the final quarter, Kingstone were able to pull away. With time short and no time outs remaining, Kingstone were able to come away with the win, final score: Kingstone Knights 59 – 47 Chesterfield Basketball Club. An impressive performance from Nuta White in only his 3rd game for the club, earned him the Game MVP.

Club statement regarding our junior sessions

As many of you know, our junior sessions on Saturday have been heavily impacted by exams taking place and/or other events which have often lead to our sessions being cancelled due to the sports hall being unavailable. This is particularly worse during the start of the year during mock exams and then during the main exams season which takes place from the end of April until late June.

We always knew when hiring a school venue that this may present a problem but had perhaps, at the time, not realised, just how many sessions would get cancelled by the school. We are currently losing around 12 sessions a year (not including holidays/breaks).

We have been desperately trying to find an alternative venue and explore all options for quite some time now but the alternatives are not without their own issues. One option was to move to Clay Cross Go Active (formerly Sharley park leisure centre) but this would mean moving sessions to Sundays. The 2nd option was to move over to Go Active Dronfield but this would have a much earlier start time for both sessions. Both options were met with very mixed responses and whilst the majority of the 11-15 age group would be able to make the switch, there were still quite a few who could not. Equally, in the 6-10 age group, many parents indicated it would not be possible. All in all, by making either of the switches, we would see a loss of approximately 12 people over the 2 sessions, not to mention the impact on coaching availability also if these changes were made.

There is a huge desire to grow our juniors, gain consistency and start to play in some friendlies with other clubs and of course, this is made difficult when we have large gaps in our sessions due to the cancellations. That said, we have rather exhausted all of our options at this point as there are no other venues that have availability to accommodate us on a more permanent basis and any availability that other venues do have, present other issues.

After much consideration, the decision has been taken that our juniors will remain at Tupton Hall School on Saturday mornings for the foreseeable future unless a suitable alternative was to come up, although we do not envisage this will be anytime soon. We appreciate this means there will be at times, significant breaks to our schedule but we will of course endeavor to let you know about these as soon as we are aware. We appreciate this will be frustrating for you and we assure you, it is just as frustrating for us but we hope you can understand and appreciate the situation.

Chesterfield Basketball Club V Axholme Tanks.

The club hosted Axholme Tanks on Wednesday 11th February at our home venue in what started off a fast paced affair back and forth with baskets and little to separate both teams. Chesterfield lead most of the 1st quarter and finished it trailing by just 2 points 14-16. A quick fire of succession from Axholmes number 10 saw us trailing and going into half time 22-38 down. 2 very close quarters in Q3 and Q4 with only 3 points and 2 points separating them individually, showed that Chesterfield had some fight back and could go toe to toe with the visitors but arguably the damage had been done in Q2 where the gap had become a little too big to plug. Some new faces into the team was great to see from an individual respect with all showing off their strengths including an MVP performance from Nathaniel Berge on debut. Final Score: Chesterfield Basketball Club 46 - 67 Axholme Tanks.

Chesterfield Basketball Club come up short 40 - 52 to Kingstone Knights.

The club hosted Kingstone Knights at home on 15/1/26 in what was the 2nd friendly organised against the Barnsley based club. A much tighter game compared with the first outing with the score line going back and forth throughout and Chesterfield holding a narrow lead for the best part of 3 quarters of the game. Knights' experience shined through in the final quarter and pulled away to take the win. A lot of positives from the game with a team who are evidently improving with every game that they play. MVP award being awarded to Max Hartshorn.

Junior sessions update for November

Unfortunately, there will be no training sessions for our juniors on Saturday the 15th, 22nd and 29th of November. This is due to exams taking place at the school in which it makes the sports hall unavailable. An alternative solution has been approached but we are met with similar problems across other schools too. Those halls which are not affected by exams are fully booked leaving us with no option but to cancel the sessions. In the long term, we will be looking for a more sustainable alternative as this will likely happen again in the future. Our senior sessions on Wednesday nights are unaffected and will continue as normal.

Chesterfield Basketball Club win!!!

Chesterfield Basketball Club played their 2nd competitive fixture at Canon Medical Arena on Monday 22nd of September winning a hard fought contest 47 - 42 against Sheffield Friendly Basketball. A stand out performance from game MVP James Stennett with 24 points made a big difference. That said, a real team effort with rebounds and steals that really made the difference with a lot of intensity and passion showed by the team demonstrating massive improvements from our first game. The club continues to build a firm foundation and develop so that when we enter competitions next year, Chesterfield will be more than ready to be competitive within them.
